Zimbabwe On Hantavirus Alert As Three Health Workers Return From Ascension Island
Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC) says three Zimbabwean healthcare workers who recently returned from Ascension Island are now under quarantine and active monitoring after being identified as contacts of a confirmed hantavirus case while abroad.
The announcement, made late on May 11, 2026, immediately triggered debate and concern on social media, with some Zimbabweans questioning the risks and the country’s preparedness.
The ministry said the three individuals are currently healthy but are being monitored as part of international public health protocols.
According to the Ministry of Health and Child Care Zimbabwe, the healthcare workers were screened upon arrival at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport in Harare.
In a statement posted on X on May 11, 2026, the ministry said:

The ministry added:

Health Ministry Announces Quarantine Measures
The ministry said Port Health Services had already conducted a risk assessment and activated precautionary measures.

In its statement, the ministry explained:
“The travellers will undergo screening and assessment by PHS upon arrival at RGMIA.”

“Arrangements are being made for the travellers to remain together in a designated private isolation facility during the quarantine period.”
Social Media Reactions Flood In
Following the announcement, Zimbabweans flooded social media with questions, fears and speculation.
X user @MtshalikaQoma questioned the need for quarantine measures.
“So if it cannot be transmitted from one person to another through contact or caring for the infected why should they be isolated and quarantined?”
Another user, @calvinl48250947, asked:
“What were they doing in Ascension Island? Why are they coming home?”
Others expressed fear and uncertainty.
“Hmmn its back to sanitise masks and gloves,” wrote @mkhululidube17.
User @mandem_l01 criticised the timing of the ministry’s announcement, posting:
“You posted this in the middle of the night at 23:50 because deep down you know you don’t have the facilities.”
Meanwhile, @cybertron123 urged authorities to take the matter seriously.
“We need seriousness on this one!!”
Questions Raised Over Hantavirus Risks
The MoHCC statement did not indicate that the three Zimbabwean healthcare workers had tested positive for hantavirus. The ministry specifically referred to them as contacts of a confirmed case.
The ministry also did not disclose where on Ascension Island the exposure allegedly occurred or provide details about the confirmed hantavirus patient linked to the case.
Ascension Island is a British Overseas Territory located in the South Atlantic Ocean west of Angola.
The health ministry has not yet announced additional restrictions or emergency measures linked to the development as of May 12, 2026.
