Veteran ZBC journalist Rueben Barwe has revealed that President Emmerson Mnangagwa played a part in businessman Wicknell Chivayo gifting him a luxury vehicle and US$100,000.

On Thursday, 22 May, Barwe received a 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser VXR LX 300 Series, and on top of that, Chivayo gave him a hefty cash gift of US$100,000.

“He Deposited US$100,000 Into My Account” – Barwe Confirms

Speaking in a video shared by social media personality Cleopas Huruva Mukungunugwa (also known as C.H. Mukungunugwa), Barwe confirmed that Chivayo had deposited US$100,000 into his bank account. He expressed deep gratitude for both the money and the vehicle.

“Yes, I want to acknowledge that Sir Wicknell has deposited a hundred thousand United States dollars into my account on top of the vehicle he donated to me today. I want to thank him for his generosity.”

“I Served This Country for Over 40 Years”

Barwe then reflected on his journey as a journalist working for the state broadcaster. He spoke of the challenges he’s faced, including being placed under sanctions by Western governments, and how he never gave up on telling Zimbabwe’s story. He explained that Chivayo recognised this dedication and decided to honour it.

“I’ve been in service over 40 years. Working for this country. Being put on sanctions by the Americans and by the Europeans, but I stood fast, and it is this young man who later recognised that this man has been persistent, consistent, defending Zimbabwe’s interests on the box, and I’m also very grateful,” Barwe added.

Mnangagwa Played a Role in Chivayo Gifting Barwe US$100K and a Luxury SUV

Barwe also made it clear that the President himself gave the green light for the gift. He thanked both Chivayo and Mnangagwa for the gesture.

“I also thanked him and the President of the Republic for consenting that I should get this gift. Well appreciated, Sir Wicknell,” Barwe said.
