Scott Sakupwanya Pushes for US$3 Million Premiership Prize Money
Scottland president Scott Sakupwanya has called for a dramatic increase in prize money for the Castle Lager Premiership, proposing that league winners should receive up to US$3 million.
The businessman believes such a move would transform Zimbabwean football and elevate the domestic league’s competitiveness.
His remarks come at a time when new financial incentives are emerging in local football, particularly with the introduction of the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup.
New Competition Raises the Stakes
Sakupwanya says the introduction of the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup — which offers US$1 million to its winners — has significantly shifted expectations around prize money in the local game.
He argued that the country’s top-flight league should reflect these changes and offer rewards that match the growing financial landscape.
“When you look at what is happening in our football, including new stadiums and the arrival of the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup, it is only fair for league winners to get US$3 million,” he said.
Boosting Quality and Competition
According to Sakupwanya, increasing prize money would have a ripple effect across the league, attracting better talent and improving overall standards.
“If we have that kind of sponsorship, the quality of the league will improve. We will attract more talented foreign players who will compete with our local players,” he said.
“It will raise the bar for our league.”
He added that Zimbabwe’s current economic environment could sustain such sponsorship, making the proposal achievable.
Aiming for Continental Top Spot
If implemented, the proposed US$3 million prize would make Zimbabwe’s Premiership the highest-paying league in Africa in terms of winnings for champions.
Currently, South Africa leads the continent, with its league champions earning just over US$1 million — significantly less than what Sakupwanya is proposing.
The Munhumutapa Challenge Cup has already set a new benchmark locally, with its US$1 million prize exceeding what champions in several African leagues receive.
Scottland Riding a Wave of Success
Sakupwanya’s ambitions come as his club continues to enjoy a successful run. Scottland recently secured multiple trophies, including the Independence Cup, and has been dominant in domestic competitions.
The club owner is also investing in infrastructure, with plans to build stadiums in Mabvuku and at a sports complex in Ruwa.
“I had a dream to transform our facilities in Mabvuku. When we have our own stadium and sponsors willing to invest US$3 million, then we will be talking serious business,” he said.
Vision for the Future
Sakupwanya believes that bold financial investment is key to unlocking the full potential of Zimbabwean football.
With improved infrastructure, higher rewards, and stronger competition, he says the local game can reach new heights both regionally and internationally.
